SHOULDER DISLOCATION

SHOULDER DISLOCATION

A dislocated shoulder is when your upper arm bone (humerus) is accidentally forced out of its socket which holds it in place. It occurs only from a trauma and can’t simply be dislocated on its own.

You will know if you do dislocate your shoulder. You will have just had an accident involving your shoulder, and will immediately have excruciating pain, total immobility, numbness into your fingers, and nausea.

You will likely have to go immediately to the hospital where surgeons will put your shoulder back into its socket.

What Treatments Consist Of:

Shoulder dislocations are extremely serious and must be dealt with properly, to minimize any potential permanent damage from occurring. We will not treat this condition until a Cat scan (CT) or a Magnetic resonance image (MRI) has been conducted which tells us how severe the region has been damaged. If we are confident that we can help, here is what we provide in therapy.

  • Immediate reduction and elimination of any swelling.
  • Quick pain relief.
  • Treat any muscular tendinous micro tearing which will have occurred in the trauma.
  • Remove as much muscle guarding as the body will let us. A neurological spasm and contracture process will inhibit normal use of the shoulder. We can get some of this reduced, but not all as it serves an important purpose.

Number of Treatments

It is not possible to say how many treatments may be required to resolve this condition. There are too many variables to consider and without a specific case to discuss, is not possible at this time. However, it could take up to 10 treatments to resolve a dislocated shoulder as long as any ligament tearing was not too severe or it was surgically repaired.

What to Expect During Treatment:

When we are treating muscles, tendons, ligaments, bursas, and joint cartilage, you can expect everything from burning, ache, numbness, temperature changes from hot to cold, and some sharpness as all of the structures are addressed.

As with all of our treatments, however, any discomfort in treatment quickly reduces as the minutes pass during each session, and from treatment to treatment.

What to Expect After Treatment:

You will feel a sense of relief but will have some tenderness for a few days. Within a few weeks of treatment, the pains of the dislocation will be replaced with ones of tenderness and eventually will totally be eliminated.

Side-effects to Treatment:

There are no adverse side-effects.
